ABSTRACT

Historical analyses have for many years examined the relationship between transportation and land use. The influence of transportation infrastructure on land use patterns is a cornerstone of urban economic models, dating from the classic work of Alonso (1964), Mills (1972) and Muth (1969). The monocentric urban model and its descendants are theories of land markets, with adjustments that play out on a scale of decades. The behavioural actors are individuals and households choosing locations.
