ABSTRACT

George Crichton Miln was the actor-manager of such a touring company, which strolled all over the States, Australia and the Far East. In 1891 the company visited Japan with a repertoire of several Shakespearean plays. They were the first Shakespearean productions performed in complete texts on the Japanese stage. This essay is an enquiry into the influence of these productions on Japanese intellectuals, in particular Shoyo Tsubouchi, with an investigation into the itinerary of the Miln Company's tour around the Empire and Japan.
