ABSTRACT

In this chapter I want to illustrate what is at stake in Christine Battersby’s view of the self by juxtaposing her contemporary feminist philosophy with work that is taking place within the philosophy of science, in particular the work of Andy Clark and of Susan Oyama. This does not purport to be a definitive account of such debates but is used simply to draw out some of general approaches to the self that I think these theorists have in common, despite the fact that they do not engage with each other’s work. I highlight those themes which are potentially useful for feminist legal theory.
