ABSTRACT

OCEANOGRAPHY, like the other environmental sciences, is less of a science than an application of science in general to the study of a particular subject, the sea in this instance. It differs from geology, meteorology and biology in that whereas they can be studied to a considerable degree without having to be broken down into their component specialized branches, physical oceanography at any rate cannot now develop and never could beyond a very early stage without the assistance of the mathematical and physical sciences and a certain amount of technical skill.
