ABSTRACT

There must be a formal documented procedure to manage design, with built-in checks and balances. It is crucial to keep product safety at the forefront of the design process. The danger is that it may become lost in the drive to get the product into production and on to the market. It can be an advantage to have fixed stages in the review at which the members of the team have to sign off that they are satisfied with the specified progress to date. Safety information should be permanently fixed to the product, catch the end-user's attention and be in a form which he or she can easily understand. The illustrations of design reviews that follow show that there can be no single way of applying a review. Design review systems provide a formal, documented procedure with built-in checks and balances. It is the process of innovation that is important rather than the product.
