ABSTRACT
Giventhelackofcontemporaryempiricaldataonwhether,howandwhyUK deprivedurbanneighbourhoodsparticipateinself-helpactivity,in1998-99, evidencewascollectedusingstructuredinterviewswithhouseholds.These structuredinterviewswerethenalsorepeatedwithhouseholdsinaffluent suburbsasa'control'groupagainstwhichtheresultscouldbecompared.In thischapter,weprovideananalysisoftheareasstudiedalongwiththe methodologyemployedtoevaluatetheextent,natureandmotivesfor participationinself-help.
