ABSTRACT

Possession of the concepts of faith, hope and reason creates certain possibilities for 'restoring faith in reason'. This chapter discusses the redemption of truth and faith in reason, it is necessary to say something more about the definition of philosophy which is at play. The concept of truth appears in the Pope John Paul II's account of man and woman. For bell hooks, a writing life becomes not only a means to make sense of one's own life and the world, but a means to create a redemptive practice characterized by truth-telling. Drucilla Cornell also builds upon hooks's idea that, in retelling stories of slavery and oppression, feminist philosophers can generate a new conception of humanity for men and women who genuinely seek to uncover the particular conditions for their own freedom as passionate and sexuate beings. In particular, the contemporary diremption of faith and reason, of theology and philosophy, runs deep amongst privileged philosophers and philosophical theologians.
