ABSTRACT

Ramsay MacDonald reflected in his diary on a momentous day, 23 January 1924:

Without fuss, the firing of guns, the flying of new flags, the Labour Gvt. has come in. At noon there was a Privy Council at Buck. Pal.; the seals were handed to us - and there we were, Ministers of State. At 4 we held our first Cabinet. A wonderful country. Now for burdens and worries.1
