ABSTRACT

The relationship between school and religion, like that between state and church, is a matter of national sovereignty in each European country and the EU does not have any uniform approach towards teaching religion in public schools. Yet, as we will see, though the breadth of the different national solutions is great, there is a degree of European inte gration in this field, as in many others. Be it for social or legal reasons, we discern an ef fective convergence in the way European countries attempt to meet the challenges facing public education in secularised, pluralistic societies.
