Introduction

During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, technological advance and industrial expansion introduced new challenges to the workplace. Within these changes, the emergence of dangerous and unhealthy conditions were perhaps some of the most immediate and threatening, and a ‘secret successful war’ was waged on the working population that brought ‘infirmity, sickness and death’, but nowhere were the perils more plentiful and oppressive than in mining.1
