ABSTRACT

Inrecentyears,therehasbeensubstantialresearchintostudentlearningin highereducationandmuchkeenscrutinyofprofessionaleducation.This workhaslookedatthedifferentapproachesnovicesusetoundertakevariouslearningtasksandattheoutcomesofusingtheseapproachesonstudent learning(MartonandSaljo1984;Saljo1988;MartonandRamsden1987).In socialworkeducation,therehavealsobeenanumberofrecentinfluential studieswhichhavelookedparticularlyattheprocessesofteaching,learning andassessmentinrelationtosupervision(GrayandGardiner1992;Gardiner 1984,1989).Inparticular,therehasbeenmuchinterestintherelationship betweentheoryandpractice,asreferencestoa'gapbetweentheoryand practice'insocialworkareacknowledgedtobe'commonplace'(Pilalis1986, p.79).
