ABSTRACT

Threedialecticalissuesforsocialworkeducation,inthe1990sandtheturnof thecentury,havebearingontheconceptoflearningforreflectivepractice. Theseare(i)theissuebetweenacademiceducationandexperientiallearning,(ii)theissuebetweenageneralistperspectiveandspecialization,and (iii)theissuebetweentheoreticalknowledgeandthenatureoftherealsocial world.Icalltheseissuesdialecticalbecausetherearepowerfulopinionsand opposingpositionsinvolved-inthefirstinstance,fromoutsidetheprofession,inthesecondinstance,fromwithintheprofession,andinthethird, bothfromwithinandwithouttheprofessionofsocialwork.Adiscussionof theseissuesmaychallengethethinkingofthelearner,theteacherandthe curriculumplanner,andmayfosterareflectivequalityinthesocialworker's understandingofhis/herprofessionandpractice.
