ABSTRACT

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a terrible liar. My dreams of being an actor were quashed long ago when struggling to keep a straight face while telling my mother a white lie. I like candour. I find it refreshing. To me, there seems to be a lack of frankness in academia. Honesty is the best policy and I applaud sincerity and transparency. This is partly why I wrote this book. I believe that others can benefit from honesty; they can learn from our (and my) experiences. I seek to shed light on the intricacies, fallacies and perceived nepotism and gatekeeping of academia. There is quite a lot to learn about playing the academic game. The so-called unwritten rules are prevalent and have confounding consequences if they are not observed.
