ABSTRACT
The previous chapter assessed the possibility that undermining capacity and flexibility in competency assessments could allow an alternative route for overriding refusals of consent to treatment by pregnant women. A further potential avenue for promoting compliance and ‘good behaviour’ in pregnancy – either directly or via a policy of ‘pour encourager les autres’1 – is that of questioning child welfare.
