ABSTRACT

The nature of the settlement, the distribution of land, the allocation of property rights, and the establishment of 'family' units for the reproduction of human population was initially carried out predominantly according to European cultural values and by, and to the advantage of, the white males. The first year was a busy one, filled with hard work for all. Land had to be cleared and planted, animals raised and houses built. They lived in tents made from sails while the settlement was established. The main village was supplemented by other dwellings. The other side of the island proved more suitable for the cultivation of yams and was higher and cooler so summer houses were built there to enjoy the coolness and as temporary shelters while they tilled these crops. Within this small island there was a degree of privacy and movement with different people being in different places at different times.
