Chapter 2 noted that folklorists and musicologists initially came to the preservation system with different concerns, and Chapter 3 focused on the court, literati and professional folk genres favoured by musicologists. It was with folksongs that scholars from the two disciplines met, and in Chapter 4 I explore how folksongs have been defined and documented, before considering holders of folksong Properties.
