ABSTRACT

It has been argued that by ‘righteousness’ (dikaiosunē) Paul means ‘a state/manner of existing which subsists in a way of doing what is right’ and in the course of that argument reference was made to the fact that Paul contrasts ‘the righteousness that comes from the law’ and ‘the righteousness that comes from faith’ (Rom 10:5f). The way of doing what is right that is based on religious law is relatively easy to describe; it amounts to the determined and persevering observation of the commands contained within that law. But what of the way of doing what is right based on faith? This chapter will suggest how Paul considers that direction for behaviour can be given with just as much clarity through faith as through law.
