ABSTRACT

It may come as a surprise to find a chapter on sex and international travel in a book entitled Passenger Behaviour, and it is perhaps useful to start by explaining why this issue is an important one to consider. Many readers of this text may work within the travel industry, and may be frequent international travellers in the course of their work. They may also have direct experience of some of the issues discussed below by:

• coming into contact with groups of young people before, during or after being on holiday (especially organised by tour operators like Club 18-30); coming into contact with tourists, especially single male tourists, travelling to countries with a reputation for sex tourism;

• travelling, either on business or for a holiday, to countries known to have a significant sex industry catering for tourists;

• travelling to countries known to be a significant source of sex trafficking; • coming into contact with young women and children entering the UK

who have travelled from such countries (who may be being trafficked); • being sexually active while away from home on business or on holiday.
