ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews and principles of the holistic method of course design. The five stages of developing dramaturgy are presented: development of the main course theme, development of the scenario, the practical dramaturgy, the completion of the scenario and the dramaturgy on the course. The practical dramaturgy is the development of the different types of activities and games or the selection of existing activities to fulfil specific dramaturgy needs. The scenario links the games and activities with the themes, waves and rhythm of the dramaturgy. A ‘dramaturgy arch’ is a connection between the activities, which comes naturally and magically. A dramaturgy ‘event’ is something extra, a new idea, which is highly unusual and successful. Significant events in the dramaturgy are often the peak activities, which may push participants’ comfort zones and/or produce significant learning. Creating the scenario is practically applying the dramaturgy rules and translating the themes into concrete activities.
