ABSTRACT

In this chapter I want to show above all else how religion is deeply implicated in all kinds of things that are not included in a purist definition of religion.1 The patterns of connection that interest sociologists of religion are patterns of culture profoundly stained in this way or that by religious colouring. Politics and religion may be joined or separated in different ways in varying national contexts, but in any given case politics and religion are isomorphic. You read from the one to the other.
