ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to mirror community social work's intention to combine down-to-earthness with reflective analysis and management technology. It explores the concepts which are part of general management literature —;; the management of risk, change, group culture and so on. The chapter focuses on management control processes —;; planning and operating budgets, using information technology, and carrying out monitoring and evaluation. Community social work managers have tended to become marginalised from the main stream of social services management. Community social work managers have abandoned a leaning towards existentialism for a new commitment to performance indicators and open use of information technology. No management text can provide the 'right' answer to any problem faced by a manager in real life —;; not least because any problem or situation is a unique combination of a number of elements. The chapter concludes with an example of a manager in action where creativity and innovation are brought to bear.
