ABSTRACT

But if there are competing versions of Englishness, the question arises whether there might also be different and perhaps competing versions of northern regional identity within the North, and perhaps therefore different intra-regional sporting identitie~. Was there any general sense ofNorthernness in sport throughout northern England at times in the past or were there differences between different regions? Was a sense of rivalry with, or difference from, the sporting South differently felt by players or spectators in different regions within the North?
