ABSTRACT

When thinking about the world, it is natural to reach for a world map for reference. Usually Canadians would look at a map with the American continent placed at what appears to be the centre of the world, with Europe to the right and the eastern half of Asia to the left. Similarly, Europeans would likely look at a map with Europe in the so-called centre, with Asia to the right and the Americas to the left. A Japanese map would find the Americas positioned to the right and Europe to the left, with the Japanese archipelago positioned in the central position. These simple cartographic facts offer a revealing insight into how different individuals perceive the world.
