ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an account of the urban experience of transport seen through a lens which views an understanding of social connections and neighbourhood ties as central to an appreciation of transport’s impact on a person’s life. The chapter builds on the themes drawn out in Chapters 1 and 2 in recognising the symbiotic relationship between transport and social relations in contemporary urban environments. The chapter uses the findings of the primary research carried out in Barton in Oxford as a basis for the understandings of transport and social inclusion that are developed as the chapter progresses. These findings are supported by other primary data collected during the current study in Cowley Road, a multi-ethnic area, on an urban radial route into Oxford.
