At the outbreak of the First World War house building in England and on the Continent showed no discernible signs of breaking away from traditional styles. Concrete and reinforced concrete were accepted as materials to be used instead of brick and stone, maybe hesitantly, but before these new materials could demonstrate any signicant contribution, house building in most of Europe came to a virtual standstill.
