ABSTRACT

Throughout the chapters of this book, a number of themes have emerged within the context ofland management and development in rural and urban areas. These can be summarised as follows. Firstly, both rural and urban development is a very complex process in both developed and transitional countries. Furthermore, the existing interrelationships between the rural and urban areas need to be carefully monitored and assessed to prevent unnecessary conflicts in the peri-urban regions. For this to be achieved in a satisfactory manner there is an important need for the development and implementation of methodologies, models, and instruments to enable satisfactory decision-making in rural and urban regions. It is also essential that these methodologies, models, and instruments be continually reviewed in the light of changing needs and different circumstances and a legal framework (either regional, national, or transnational) to be developed and implemented for all aspects of land development.
