ABSTRACT

Illusion is a description of a state when the thoughts of the imaginative function stand unconnected to the outcomes of the memory and experience functions. In worship delusion can be seen in individuals who claim to be God, or Jesus, or to have received strange messages from the Holy Spirit. The art of sacramental prayer enables to link the outward form of the sacrament to the inner significance of its spiritual meaning in such a way that the holy is mediated to the one at prayer. Many see a close connection between the imaginative function in the brain and the work of the Holy Spirit. Through its stable structures worship should be able to draw on many memories from the past, and at the same time excite the imagination to find the pathway into the future. Imagination creates a vision for the future which in turn sustains our hope to fulfill that vision.
