ABSTRACT

The opening pages of the Hexaëmeron provide the clearest indication of Grosseteste’s understanding of theology as a discpline, making it a good place to begin.1 Here he establishes what he considers the subject matter of theology to be, and this discussion provides a number of clues as to how Grosseteste embraced the discipline as a whole. Any careful explication of his argument must keep in mind his original aims: to explain why the Bible begins with the creation narrative. Not only does this ensure that we do not read too much into his discussion about the nature of theological discourse, but it also will keep us on a correct path towards an accurate description of his theological outlook.
