ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at planning for leadership in two parts: first, a model for addressing leadership in project management and, second, the application of the model in projects. Leaders do need to consider the delivery of tasks through both individuals and teams. According to John Adair, leaders should address three key areas: task, team maintenance, and individual needs. The Team Maintenance and Individual Needs circles are nicely addressed by the application of good coaching. An excellent way of learning is from the personal attention of a coach. Coaching takes place on the job and it aims to increase the skills needed to deliver a task actually being worked on. It is very similar to on the job training but in coaching a specific team member will be given the role of coach to an individual. For the brochure project, kick-start the training of the team by sending each of them to an off-site training course.
