ABSTRACT

Estrangement, Fluidity and Femininity My kind of travelling Marie is sixty-three years old and lives in a small town in the middle of Europe. She joined the Hurtigruta in Bergen, having flown in from her home country. She is travelling alone and enjoys spending time alone on deck reading or just relaxing. Marie decided to travel to the north on the Hurtigruta several years ago, but not as an ordinary tourist. She is not travelling because of the North Cape. Being an ordinary tourist is not her kind of travelling, Marie claims. She wanted to travel with a postal ship, a historical and authentic ship, not a cruise ship. She distances herself from the tourists she is travelling with, saying they are interested in the wrong things when they travel. Tourists book package tours, she says, and place great value on unimportant details.
