ABSTRACT

The Race Relations Act (RRA) 1976 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 are phrased in similar terms outlawing both direct and indirect discrimination and making overtly discriminatory behaviour a criminal offence. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 covers, discrimination in the areas of employment and the provision of goods, facilities and services. The RRA makes it unlawful to discriminate either directly or indirectly on the grounds of race, colour, nationality or ethnic origin in the provision of housing, employment, education or the provision of goods, services or facilities to the public. The Race Relations Act, unlike the Sex Discrimination Act, does not apply to employment in private households. Under the Sex Discrimination Act, unlike the Equal Pay Act, there is no need to identify an individual who has been more favourably treated on the grounds of sex. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 covers only direct discrimination against people with disabilities, and not indirect discrimination 'on the grounds of disability'.
