Attraction and repulsion have been called ‘older’ than understanding or the failure to understand.2 We might look, then, not at Kierkegaard’s thoughts but at his preferences. He preferred passion to knowledge, although his praise of passion often states that real knowledge depends upon passion. In the Postscript, for example, the passion of subjectivity appears as the only path to real knowledge.
