ABSTRACT

Jesus and Satan co-existed for over two millennia within the Judaeo-Christian tradition before being joined by Joseph Smith in a triad that would drive his newly founded Mormonism through its Plan of Salvation. Christian identity is, thus, ever a delicate matter involving the desire to protect its sense of privileged access to truth against ‘false’ interpretations. Narrative, itself, is of the essence of humanity, whether in daily gossip, personal reports or in historical, literary, theological or sacred texts. The Christian consciousness of its Jewish foundation has often assumed a dramatic break from its parent symbolized by the Old and New Testament divide within the Christian Bible. The new doctrine of the Trinity reinforced that divide, while the ongoing existence of Jews served as a perpetual reminder of distinction, with periods of anti-Semitism reinforcing the problematic dynamics of religious identity-construction.
