Given the truism that the identity of God was absolutely central to all other aspects of Christian faith and life, the same polemical opponents – Romanists, Arminians, Socinians – have to be addressed across the whole spectrum of theological discussion; and when the centrality of Trinitarianism to Reformed Orthodoxy as a whole is acknowledged, it is clear that the principle opponents in polemic will be those who push hardest for the refinement or even abandonment of this basic Christian tenet. Reformed Orthodoxy makes a basic distinction between archetypal and ectypal theology. In common with Reformed theologians from Calvin onwards, Owen holds to the doctrine of the simplicity of God. The Reformation scripture principle always had the potential to be used in a way which did not simply critique the traditional teachings of the church but could also overthrow them wholesale.
