Jōruri and the Puppet Theatre

With this chapter we move from medieval to the ‘early modern’ Edo (or Tokugawa) era (1603–1867), also called the Closed Country era, during which the katarimono scene was dominated by jōruri, musical narrative accompanied by the shamisen.
