ABSTRACT
The play was fi rst performed in 1849,1 but the copy-text for this edition is that published in 1856 by Samuel French, of 121 Nassau-Street, New York, as No. CXXXVL in French’s American Drama Series, ‘The Acting Edition’. The title-page specifi es that the play is ‘As Performed at Laura Keene’s Varieties’ and confi rms that the play has been ‘entered according to Act of Congress’ in 1856 ‘by John Brougham in the Clerk’s Offi ce of the District court of the United States for the Southern District of New York’.
