ABSTRACT
The copy-text for this edition is the English text from the dual-language GermanEnglish version printed in New York in 1870; the imprint is ‘Fourteenth Street Theatre’. Despite being a published work, it is extremely rare, and I have identifi ed only three copies in the world. One of these (at the University of Missouri at Kansas City) is seriously defective, since Act II Scene VII runs into Act III Scene VII, thus missing out Act II Scenes VIII-XII and Act III Scenes I-VI. I have not seen the copy at Trinity College, Hartford Connecticut. The copy at Harvard is complete and is now held in the Houghton Rare Books Collection.
