ABSTRACT

It can be without any doubt whatsoever, that the impact and significance of the events of 9/11 will have a deeply profound effect on the psyche of the American people;l not only those who experienced the traumatic events either directly or indirectly, but also those future generations who will need to try to understand and comprehend both the magnitude and relevance of the event in its rightful context. The same will no doubt be true for the wider world, watching the events dramatically unfold in the safety of their own homes and offices through the global lens of the world' s media. It is still unclear some two years on, exactly how dramatically the events of 9/11 have affected the world today and what the legacy for tomorrow will be. To what extent 9/11 overshadows for example the ongoing 'war on terror', the worsening situation between Israel and Palestine, and the war in Iraq can only be guessed at as we are all unsure how such global tensions and relations would have otherwise unfolded. Before 9/11, such international flashpoints were at best misty: since then however, the heavy metaphorical fog still rising from the twin towers makes everything increasingly difficult to see. The need for clarity is vital.
