ABSTRACT
The rapid pace of change towards the end of the twentieth century has also ensured that the family, no less than other social institutions, is itself subject to change, with varying consequences for roles and relationships of individual family members, as well as changing expectations of the collective unit. In particular, the role of women, attitudes to children and policies which are aimed specifically at families are explored in this context.
