Introduction: Interdisciplinarity of Migration Research as Applied Science

Migration research is generally as a field of research predestined for interdisciplinary research. An indication of this is the general willingness to provide a considerable amount of resources for the establishment of research centers transversal to disciplinary institutions on a national and international level,1 for national

international conferences, research projects and other forms of collaboration. Large parts of the comparative literature in this field are a result of this (e.g. Bade and Weiner, 1997; Hammar, 1985; Hammar et al., 1996; Joppke, 1998), Interdisciplinarity of research is generally seen as worth funding, not only in relation to migration research. But it is an undertaking not only sometimes practically difficult to organize but also scientifically challenging. For those reasons we migration research as a field which provides an excellent occasion to address some of the problems connected with interdisciplinary research.
