ABSTRACT

Many fields of human endeavour require lengthy periods of training and practice to achieve high-levels of performance. Indeed, expertise is generally defined as 'having or showing special skill or knowledge derived from training or experience' (Allen, 2000). Much attention has been paid to the field of training in aviation and elsewhere. Enormous investments of time and resources have been made in developing training systems and improving training technology. The world's civil airlines and military forces have been at the forefront of simulator use in training. An extensive scientific literature on training in general, and simulator use in particular, has now been built up.
