ABSTRACT

Gendér wayang is just one of the diverse range of Balinese musical ensembles sometimes referred to as gamelan (a Javanese term) or its Balinese equivalent, gambelan. 1 Each of these types of ensemble may play on a number of different ritual or social occasions, some becoming associated with a particular ritual event, such as gamelan angklung with cremation ceremonies. As its name implies, the main role of gendér wayang is to accompany Balinese shadow puppet plays.
