ABSTRACT
The post-1945 era of planned housing and planned urban development gradually faded away as the assumptions and practices of comprehensive planning appeared progressively less relevant and feasible. The policies pursued by the Conservative government in power from 1951 to 1964 constituted the rst stage of a gradual unravelling, as it meant that private developers became primarily responsible for plan implementation. The abandonment of mass council house building constituted the later stages.
