ABSTRACT
Urban design makes repeated reference to villages, neighbourhoods and communities. The neighbourhood is also an aspect of urban policy, for example in policies for social cohesion. Why should this be? What is the signicance of the neighbourhood in planning and urban policy? What exactly is the neighbourhood in any case?
