ABSTRACT
HUD studies in the 1960s in the United Kingdom were performancebased. Naish measured approach-tracking performance, lateral and glideslope errors (1-3). Among the conclusions was that director symbols and slight pitch-scale compression improved tracking performance. A shortcoming of the objective data was the absence of any measurement of the pilots’ ability to maintain situational awareness in flight.
