ABSTRACT

The primary aim of this investigation is not to elucidate complex philosophical matters for the sake of making a contribution to the philosophical tradition within which it is embedded - not at all. To be sure, the investigation will hopefully have the effect of paying respect to the venerable philosophical tradition of the West. Indeed, the manner in which I pay my respects is one that takes me back to the very origins of Western philosophy. But I have been taken so far back not primarily because of my love for the history that precedes me and on which my philosophical views depend, but because I wanted to capture the very spirit that was present when Western philosophy was born and which was largely lost during its long journey to the present. But rather than excavate its remains in the manner of an archaeologist investigating the material remains of a long dead civilization, what I want to do here is to help resuscitate the spirit of Ancient philosophy.
