ABSTRACT

As noted in Chapter 9, a distinction can be made between training and instruction. Training has been defined as comprising those trainee activities that are executed in interaction with a scenario and are intended to induce or promote learning. Instructional activities have been defined as those activities executed in interaction with a training process that are intended to enhance training efficiency; i.e., instruction is regarded as a means of supporting training, and hence is subsumed under training. In this view, instruction primarily serves as a catalyst in the training process. As a catalyst, instruction should facilitate the training process without the trainee coming to rely on it.
