ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the rationale of mind-mapping. Mind-mapping can occur in a mind-boggling number of ways, only some of which have indicated. In the history of innovations, the role of the map is severely underestimated. Early explorers drew their own maps as much for themselves as for those who came after them. Map-building is a creative activity. The encouragement of the team members and the development of a creative climate both require creative leadership. Our preferred approach for mapping activities is based on the team constructing a mind-map or spider diagram. It is easy to demonstrate the creative aspect of mapping to team members who have not experienced the process before, particularly using spider diagrams. The chapter presents excellent practical applications for Post-it notes, hexagons, brown paper wall charts and rich picture systems. Computer-based systems have the advantage that the maps are easy to store and can be readily retrieved at future sessions.
