ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that a different way of looking at a situation can lead to breakthrough ideas. It reminds some earlier work with such a dream team within the petroleum exploration and production business. The chapter focuses on the dynamics of a team following the Mapping, Perspectives, and Ideas in Action (MPIA) approach, focusing on the P for perspectives. The P-stage of MPIA refers to the perspective-seeking and choosing stage. The opening up of our thought processes to new perspectives is where creative thinking starts to pay off. Team members can be coached in ways of developing breakthrough perspectives. After a search for perspectives, the team should consider whether they are satisfied with their efforts. Teams may already have preferences for non-intuitive decision processes. In conclusion, creativity at the P-stage involves decision-making that favours intuition, because more rational approaches fail under conditions of speculation and uncertainty.
