ABSTRACT
In the last two chapters we looked at research findings concerning the factors influencing peoples graphic productions and in the last chapter looked specifically at the influence of gender in one form of graphic expression, drawings and paintings. In this chapter the focus will move from productions to preferences and we will look at what has been written, in a general and specific sense, on the factors that influence people’s preferences for drawings and paintings. Key questions will focus on whether people’s aesthetic responses are homogeneous and if not, what the research literature tells us concerning the variables that influence people’s preferences. In Part III of this book, we will move on to ask similar questions of the applied sector, including design. Meanwhile, we will look at the earlier literature on preferences for the non-applied areas of graphic expression, such as drawings and paintings preferences.
